How the page compresses a video
The page runs FFmpeg, a well-known video program, in your browser. It makes an MP4 file with H.264 video and AAC sound.
In Target size mode, the page works out a bitrate from the length of the video. It aims a little under your size.
If the file is more than 3% over your target, the page encodes it a second time at a lower bitrate.
Resolution
Auto picks the largest height that keeps the picture clean at your bitrate. It never goes below 240p.
The page never makes a video larger than the original. A lower resolution gives a smaller file.
Limits
A phone can compress a file up to 250 MB. Other devices can compress a file up to 1 GB.
The work uses the memory of your browser. A long video in high resolution can use all of it. Then pick a lower resolution.
A big video takes time, because the engine runs on one thread. Keep the page open until the work ends.
The video engine
The first time you pick a video, the page downloads the video engine. It is 32 MB. Your browser keeps it for next time.
The page does not download the engine before you pick a video.

Questions
Is my video uploaded?
No. The page compresses the video in your browser. The file never leaves your device. Read the privacy page.
Is there a watermark?
No. The new video has no watermark, no logo and no extra text. You do not need an account.
How do I make a video a given size?
Choose Target size and type the size in MB. The page works out a bitrate for it. If the file is more than 3% over, the page tries a second time.
How long does it take?
It depends on your device and on the length of the video. The engine runs on one thread, so a long video takes minutes. The page shows the time left.
Why does the page say my device ran out of memory?
The browser gives the page a limited amount of memory. Pick a lower resolution or a shorter video, and try again.
Which videos can I compress?
Your browser must be able to read the video. MP4 and MOV files from a phone or a camera work in most browsers. The new file is an MP4.
