How the GIF gets its colors
A GIF frame can show 256 colors at most. The page first builds a palette of the best colors from your video.
Then it paints every frame with that palette. This keeps the colors close to the video.
How to keep the GIF small
Width, frame rate and length change the size most. A width of 480 pixels at 12 frames per second suits most uses.
A GIF over 10 MB is too big for many sites. The page warns you when your GIF is that big.
Limits
A GIF can be 30 seconds long at most. The page never makes the GIF wider than the video.
A phone can use a file up to 250 MB. Other devices can use a file up to 1 GB.
Other free tools for files

Questions
How long can my GIF be?
It can be 30 seconds long at most. A short GIF of a few seconds is smaller and loads faster.
Why is my GIF so big?
A GIF stores each frame on its own, so it is much bigger than the video. Pick a smaller width, a lower frame rate or a shorter length.
Does a GIF have sound?
No. The GIF format has no sound. The page leaves the sound out.
Will the GIF play again and again?
Yes, when Loop forever is on. This is the default. Turn it off to play the GIF one time.
Can I use a MOV or WebM file?
Yes. The page can read most video files. If your browser cannot play the file, the page reads it with its own engine. There is no preview then.
